This random event occurs in:
- Rock Homeworlds
The Long-Ranged Scanners will detect no ship presence. This event can occur only once per sector.
This event is the 3rd step in the process of unlocking the Crystal Cruiser ship and the Ancestry achievement while using the Rock Cruiser. (the Crystal Cruiser can also be unlocked by winning the game with Layout A and B of all ships, not counting the Lanius Cruiser)
- This event usually occurs at a normal beacon but will turn into a quest beacon if you have the Crystal Crew from the Stasis Pod (Ruwen).
An ancient device is orbiting within the crystal rings of a nearby gas giant. You can't discern its nature or function, but it seems to have been deactivated for a very long time. Perhaps you can get some scrap from it.
- Scrap it.
- You break it apart and take it for scrap. No one will miss it.
- You receive high scrap.
- As you start to break it apart a Rock military ship jumps nearby, "You think you can come into our sector and just steal whatever you please?! Prepare to die, vandals!"
- Fight a Rock ship (default rewards).
- You break it apart and take it for scrap. No one will miss it.
- Leave it alone.
- Better not risk it. The Rock people are unlikely to respond well to vandalism.
- Nothing happens.
- Better not risk it. The Rock people are unlikely to respond well to vandalism.
- (Crystal Crew) Reactivate it.
- Your Crystalline companion says, "It looks like we have found the abandoned link to my home worlds. I can reactivate it." He transmits some codes to the device and it immediately powers on.
Hidden Crystal Worlds[]
You arrive in a sector not listed in any star charts. Strange crystalline ships dot the horizon. Your companion speaks, "Here we are, my home sector. It has been a long time since others have set foot here, I wonder how you will be received."
- "You have done as you promised and so shall I. The coordinates of my old ship have been forwarded to your navigation system."
- A quest marker is added to your map.
Quest Marker[]
You arrive at the coordinates to find a massive Crystalline cruiser docked at a small repair station. You arrange for the ship to be sent back to the Federation base while the station upgrades your hull.
- You unlock the Crystal Cruiser; you receive medium fuel and scrap, Crystal Vengeance augmentation, and your ship receives 10 repairs.
Trivia[]
This event is called "ROCK_CRYSTAL_BEACON" in the datafiles.
The quest marker event in the Hidden Crystal Worlds is called "CRYSTAL_UNLOCK" in the datafiles.
- The 1st step of unlocking the Crystal Cruiser ship while using the Rock Cruiser is finding the Damaged Stasis Pod in a Dense asteroid field distress call event, and the 2nd step is bringing it to a Zoltan research facility.
- The damaged statis pod can be found on a distress beacon in any Engi, Pirate, or Rock sector. The Zoltan research facility can be found on a normal beacon in any Engi or Zoltan sector. Finally, the Ancient device can be found on a normal beacon in the Rock Homeworlds. If the sector map doesn't contain the proper sequence, the quest cannot be completed.
- Any Engi sector could potentially contain both the first and second events, leaving only the Ancient device event.
- Any Crystal crewmember can be used for the blue option, however, only the Crystal Crew from the Stasis Pod (Ruwen) will mark the entry beacon as a quest in the Rock Homeworlds sector.
- Therefore, it is possible to enter the Hidden Crystal Worlds by playing with the Rock Cruiser Layout C (Tektite) or a previously unlocked Crystal Cruiser without completing the whole quest line.
- HINT: The Long-Ranged Scanners mark adjacent beacons as having ships or as having no ship presence. Distraction Buoys will postpone the Rebel Fleet by 1 jump, and the mercenary can delay the Rebels by 2 jumps (or reveal the sector map). It is also possible to receive a map update as a reward in some events.
- Therefore, it is possible to enter the Hidden Crystal Worlds by playing with the Rock Cruiser Layout C (Tektite) or a previously unlocked Crystal Cruiser without completing the whole quest line.
- The strength of enemy ships in the Crystal sector corresponds to the Rock Homeworlds sector number.
- When exiting the Crystal sector, a player has no option of choosing the next sector. Instead, the ship is teleported to the next random sector following the Rock Homeworlds sector number. (sector map)
