This category contains events that cause a malfunction to a player's ship system. Usually a malfunction halves the maximum power level of one predefined system, but depending on the event can disable it entirely. When "halved", the maximum power level of a system is divided by 2 and rounded down against a player (e.g. Shields-3 will be reduced to Shields-1); a system can stay (partially) operational if the system level is sufficiently high (e.g. Oxygen-2/3 can operate as Oxygen-1). Some events disable a system completely, and the only way to prevent the malfunction is to use your own Hacking system as a counter - in that case the Hacking system will completely malfunction instead and won't be available for use in the fight.
Malfunctioning systems cannot be manned (the crew skill bonus is not applied). The system levels of a partially malfunctioning system cannot be powered, but can serve as damage buffers. A partially malfunctioning system does not require more power than can be allocated to the functioning system levels (e.g. a malfunctioning Oxygen-2/3 can operate as Oxygen-1 and will require 1 power as usual). Malfunctioning Engines are always limited to level 1.
