Mantis ship attacking civilian

This random event occurs in:

  The Long-Ranged Scanners will detect ship presence. This event can occur multiple times per sector.

The intro text for this event varies, and could be any of the following:

• You spot a Mantis ship hunting in the distance.
• A Mantis ship engaging a civilian hails you. Sparks fly about his cockpit as he yells, "Stay out of this human! Else you are next!"
• Local sensors pick up two ships engaged in a heated battle. It seems the Mantis military ship will surely defeat its prey.
• A Mantis vessel flashes past your view-screen, weapons and engines at full. A tiny blip on the sensor readout marks its quarry.
• You pick up a distress call from a civilian ship. It's being chased by a Mantis ship!
  1. Aid the civilian ship.
     • You frown, power up the weapons and prepare to engage the Mantis ship. Not today.
       • Fight a Mantis Ship.
         • (After destroying enemy ship) The Mantis ship breaks apart.
           (After killing enemy crew) No more life signs detected on the pirate ship. You hasten to contact the civilian ship.
           • You receive medium scrap with resources.
             • Attempt to contact the civilian ship.
  2. Stay out of it.
     • Smoking, the civilian ship limps on. You set your sights on the future.  OR  The noise of the FTL spinning up almost drowns out the explosions. Almost.  OR  You let them pass and try not to think about it.
       • Nothing happens.

Contact the civilian ship

• They respond, "It's a good thing you came when you did; we'd be dead now otherwise. I'm a shipwright and I'd like to help you like you helped me."
  • The captain offers to install a piece of equipment on your ship.
    • You receive a weapon with low scrap.
• The ship you saved was badly damaged in the battle. Most of the crew accepts your offer to be dropped off at a nearby station. One offers to join your crew.
  1. Welcome aboard!
     • The survivor gets on board the ship.
       • You receive a crewmember.
  2. Decline their request.
     • Nothing happens.
• "This sector has become increasingly dangerous for friends of the Federation. I think my crew can patch up some of your hull damage as thanks."
  • Your ship receives 5 repairs.
• Apparently the ship that was being assaulted was a science vessel. They thank you for saving them and offer a small reward.
  • You receive medium scrap with resources.
• It seems the crew did not survive the assault. You take what you can from the remains of the ship.
  • You receive low scrap with resources.
• The civilian ship wisely made a fast retreat while you distracted the hostile ship.
  • Nothing happens.
