Mantis ships often have weaker weapons and defenses than other ships, and (perhaps surprisingly) they can be easy targets for killing enemy crew. They never get cloaking, hacking, mind control, or drones. They are also the only race whose non-pirated ships may field two different races. One Engi always accompanies the Mantis, except for the following events where the enemy mantis ship crew lacks Engi and is entirely composed of Mantis:

Mantis ships never surrender, and they never run from a fight -- except specifically in the Mantis Ship Collectors event. This is not true for the pirate versions.

The engi starting position is always in the piloting room near a mantis-pilot, other mantis are positioned according to the system priority (for Hard, after piloting it is: engines, weapons, shields, etc); at the start of a fight the engi moves to man a system and usually doesn't board (the engi moves to man a system freed by a boarding mantis).
