Now i love this game and all but the ending doesnt make sense. Why is the base so easily destroyed? When you first jump to sector 8, you see all the federation ships in the background. Why dont those ships take on the flagship instead of sending your tiny ship that gets destroyed with couple of shots by an anti ship battery?
They are already at battle. They are busy, trying to hold off the rebel fleet. You are better equipped. They can't go fast enough. If it weren't for them, you would've been obliterated by the rebel fleet. They can't face the flagship. They have the rebels to deal with. You got 8 sectors. They got better ships, but no jumps. You are fast enough to get to the flagship. Maybe they don't have enough fuel to go around, and gave you the useless rest of it? Maybe they don't have any engines. Maybe their weapons aren't capable of killing the flagship, or even piercing it's shields. Whatever the reason, you must do it, for you can do it.
Why do we think they have better ships, though? Their top-of-the-line cruiser is only superior because of the Artillery Beam. It is not unreasonable to assume that the Kestrel is just the previous generation of Federation's larges, baddest ship-of-the-line. Yes, it's not the sci-fi cruiser you're used to; but it seems that it's quite like the three-man cruisers in Asimov's Foundation.
Also, yes, they cannot commit all the ships they have as they are being held down by the Rebel assault.
